1960s Mid Century Abstract Painting Of A Female Figure

A powerful mid-century abstract composition depicting a female figure emerging from a richly textured ground.

The painting is built up in dense, expressive layers, with a palette dominated by deep umbers, ochres, smoky greys and flashes of moss green. At the centre, the suggestion of a seated woman gradually resolves from the surrounding surface — her form partially obscured, almost dissolving into the vertical sweeps and scraped passages of paint behind her. The face and torso are only lightly defined, lending the work a contemplative, introspective mood.

The surface is worked with confident, gestural strokes and palette knife marks, creating a tactile, almost architectural texture. Darker passages frame the figure, while a swathe of warm yellow across the lower half introduces contrast and a subtle sense of grounding. The composition balances abstraction and figuration, allowing the viewer to move between reading the subject and appreciating the painting’s material qualities.

Signed and dated ’64 to the lower right, the work sits comfortably within the language of post-war European modernism, where the human form is explored through atmosphere and structure rather than precise outline.

Presented in a bold, complementary frame, the painting retains a strong decorative presence and would hold its own in both contemporary and period interiors.
