'Pink Nude', Oil Painting By Barry De More (Yorkshire 1948 2023):

'Pink Nude', Oil Painting by Barry De More (Yorkshire 1948-2023): signed and titled verso.

An expressive figurative painting by Barry De More, depicting a reclining female nude within an intimate interior. Executed in oil on board, the composition is characterised by vigorous, confident brushwork and a restrained palette of earthy browns, soft greys, olive greens and deep blues, creating a work of quiet atmosphere and painterly immediacy.

Rather than pursuing meticulous realism, De More focuses on the gesture and presence of the figure, allowing broad, energetic strokes to define form and light. The background is loosely articulated, serving as an expressive setting that enhances the contemplative mood of the composition without distracting from the subject. Thickly applied paint and visible brushwork give the surface a tactile quality, reflecting the artist's emphasis on process and observation.

The painting demonstrates the influence of post-war British figurative painting, where expressive handling of paint takes precedence over fine detail. The subdued colour palette and relaxed pose lend the work a timeless quality, while the composition retains a strong sense of intimacy and spontaneity.

Presented in a contemporary oak frame with a wide mount, complementing the earthy tonal range of the painting.

A confident and engaging example of Barry De More's figurative work, celebrating the enduring tradition of life painting through expressive mark-making and sensitive observation. Ideal for collectors of British modern art and post-war figurative painting.

Acclaimed as one of the North's greatest expressionist artists, Barry De More (1948-2023) used a heavy impasto style to transfer his love of Yorkshire landscapes, townscapes and people to canvas. His work sits comfortably in the company of work by Kossoff and Auerbach, selling to collectors in the UK and overseas. De More's work can be found in the permanent collection of work by Northern Artists at Dean Clough, one of the UK's largest contemporary art galleries.
